Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk have confirmed that the long-mooted animated Firefly reboot remains stuck in development, with no television network or streaming platform yet attached to distribute it. Speaking at a Firefly panel during MCM Comic-Con, the pair clarified that earlier news only announced the series was in development, not that it had been picked up, and stressed that securing a distributor is proving a slow and difficult process. The update matters because it dampens fan hopes, raised earlier this year when Fillion first confirmed the project, that a full revival of the beloved but short-lived 2002 space Western was imminent.

Fillion, who played Captain Malcolm Reynolds in the original series, likened the current stage to old-fashioned film processing, saying the project is still being developed and isn't ready to be "picked up" yet, while Tudyk noted the wider industry is "going through some things." Fillion is best known recently for The Rookie and his DC and Marvel roles under James Gunn, while Tudyk voiced Wash in the original Firefly. Firefly, created by Joss Whedon, ran for just one season in 2002 but retains a devoted cult following.
