Firefox’s Smart Window adds AI form filling and webpage monitoring

The Verge ·

Mozilla has added AI assisted form filling and webpage monitoring to Firefox’s Smart Window, its AI powered browsing experience. The update could make tasks such as completing job applications and tracking new listings easier, while giving users control over which open tabs supply information.

For forms with at least four text fields, users can choose “Fill from sources”, select which tabs Firefox can use, and review generated suggestions. The information from those pages is sent to Google’s Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite; support for dropdowns and PDFs is in development. Users can also set up daily or weekly webpage checks with “/watch”; checks run only while Firefox is open, pause after 60 days without a change, and stop after 90 days. Both features are rolling out to the desktop beta in the US and Canada, with other countries expected in the coming months.

In short

  • Firefox can draft form answers using information from selected open tabs.
  • Smart Window can check pages daily or weekly for changes.
  • The features are in beta in the US and Canada.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

AI form filling and page monitoring could save time on repetitive tasks, help people keep track of opportunities, and make information across selected tabs more useful. Requiring users to choose source tabs and review suggestions offers some control, while the time limits and browser-open requirement constrain ongoing monitoring.

The case against

Sending information from selected webpages to an external AI service raises reasonable questions about privacy, consent, and how sensitive details in forms or tabs are handled. Generated suggestions may also be inaccurate, and features limited to certain countries and a desktop beta may not yet be reliable or accessible enough for important applications or monitoring.

Explained simply

Mozilla makes Firefox, a web browser used to visit websites. Its Smart Window is an AI-assisted browsing feature: it can use information from pages a person chooses to help with tasks on other pages. Google provides the Gemini system that processes information for the form-filling feature.

Browsers can store or display many different kinds of information, while online forms often ask people to enter the same details repeatedly. Webpage monitoring is designed to check chosen pages for changes, such as new listings. These tools raise practical questions about what information is shared and how much control people have over when it is used.
