First-Ever ‘Saturday Night Live’ International Spin-Off Lands In Korea
A sketch from SNL Korea is being made into a sitcom, marking the first time a sketch from an international version of Saturday Night Live has spun off in this way. The move builds on the sketch’s online popularity and shows how the show’s locally created material can develop into a full series.
The Smile Clinic will run for 10 episodes of 30 minutes each on Korean streamer Coupang Play, with CP Entertainment producing. It follows staff at a cosmetic dermatology business and satirises both K-beauty and workplace politics; returning cast members include Lee Su-ji, Kim Won-hun, Gong Min-jeung, Kim Kyu-won and Ji Ye-eun. NBCUniversal Formats says the sketch’s YouTube clips have received more than 17 million views.
