Dr Vincent Brown, a 65-year-old Rwandan living in north London, has become the first person charged in the UK with offences related to the 1994 Rwanda genocide against the Tutsi. He faces one charge of conduct ancillary to genocide and six charges of conduct ancillary to murder as a crime against humanity, with prosecutors alleging he directed and incited acts of genocide and murder carried out by others. The charges demonstrate the UK authorities' commitment to pursuing accountability for international crimes decades after the events, and that the country will not harbour those suspected of such atrocities.

The investigation, conducted by the Metropolitan Police's War Crimes Team, spanned seven years following a formal request from the Rwandan government in September 2019. The alleged crimes relate to genocide in the Rugenge district of Kigali in April 1994. After reviewing extensive evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service determined the legal threshold for prosecution had been met. Brown is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, and authorities have indicated that several other investigations into similar Rwanda genocide-related offences remain ongoing in the UK.
