At least five people have died after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Flores island before dawn on Saturday. The deaths were caused by collapsing rubble while victims slept, and rescue teams are searching damaged buildings as aftershocks continue; the event matters because the remote, mountainous area may make the full scale of damage difficult to establish quickly.

The quake struck at a depth of 15km, about 1,000km from Bali, and was followed by strong aftershocks including one measuring 6.1. A tsunami warning was lifted after roughly three hours, while around 2,000 residents in Nagekeo were evacuated; damage was reported at Maumere port, where falling concrete and a collapsed gangway sent some ferry passengers into the sea.
