England have appointed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as their new Test coach, while Joe Root returns as Test captain. The changes follow Brendon McCullum’s dismissal from the red-ball role after poor results and off-field incidents, marking a significant reset for England’s Test side.

Fleming, 53, has not previously coached a national team but won five Indian Premier League titles during 17 years with Chennai Super Kings. Root, 35, previously led England from 2017 to 2022 and recorded 27 wins in 65 Tests; he and Fleming will begin their partnership ahead of December’s South Africa tour, with Marcus Trescothick taking interim charge for the Pakistan series from 19 August.
