The 33-year-old had registered through the state system and was issued an official voter registration card, yet he was arrested in a SWAT raid in February 2026 and now risks up to a year in jail. The case highlights ongoing confusion over Florida's felon voting laws, which the state has struggled to apply consistently since a 2018 constitutional amendment.

Janacek, a home improvement contractor from Boca Raton, was convicted in 2023 after police found psychedelic mushrooms in his car, for which he received four years' probation. Inspired to vote after witnessing footage of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, he researched his eligibility online, including asking an AI chatbot, which told him felons regained voting rights in Florida as of 2018 without noting he remained ineligible while on probation. He is due to stand trial this autumn and says he would rather fight the charges in court than admit to knowingly committing voter fraud.
