A 70-year-old Florida man has been arrested and charged with murder over a 1987 killing after he contacted police claiming to have information about the case. Gary Edward Glowacz approached the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office to offer details about the death of 20-year-old Melissa Ellison, but detectives instead interviewed him, obtained an arrest warrant and booked him into jail. The development revives a case that had gone cold for nearly four decades and offers a measure of resolution to the victim's family.

Ellison was found dead in her bed at a home on Colejean Road at around 4.40am on 28 December 1987, with injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. Glowacz was arrested on Wednesday and taken to the Duval County Jail on charges of murder and burglary with battery. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters used a news conference to reject the notion that homicides not solved within 48 hours cannot be closed, saying he hoped the arrest would aid the family's healing.
