Foden aims to repay Man City faith in fresh start

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Phil Foden says he wants to repay Manchester City’s faith after signing a new four-year contract and is treating the arrival of Enzo Maresca as a fresh start. The midfielder’s form has declined since his award-winning 2023-24 campaign, but City’s continued backing and Maresca’s familiarity with him could be important as the club begins a new era after Pep Guardiola’s departure.

Foden, 26, scored 19 goals in City’s 2023-24 title-winning season but managed 10 last term and has not scored in his past 31 appearances for club and country. He has made 369 City appearances, winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League and two FA Cups; he says he is now fully fit after ankle and off-field difficulties, while Maresca has described him as very important. City’s new manager will take charge for the first time in Saturday’s friendly against Inter Milan in Hong Kong.
