American Songwriter · 4 hours ago

Country singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly has said he is three days sober after relapsing following more than five years of sobriety. He described the decision to stop using all substances as necessary to protect his wellbeing, marriage, family, artistic work and career.

Kelly said a June golf-cart accident, which broke his arm, led to treatment with several strong painkillers and a month-long Percocet prescription. He said he began taking the medication excessively and secretly, and on 26 July accepted that he has a lifelong substance-use disorder; he now intends to avoid drugs, alcohol and THC permanently, while also working on nicotine use.

  • Ruston Kelly says he has resumed sobriety after a relapse.
  • A broken arm and opioid prescription preceded the relapse.
  • He plans to avoid all substances permanently.
