Ford says its $28,000 Fathom electric pickup will enter prototype production at its converted Louisville Assembly Plant in the first quarter of 2027. The vehicle is significant because it will be the first built on Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, which the company says is intended to reduce costs and make an affordable EV profitable.
The more than 70-year-old plant has been converted from producing petrol vehicles, including the Escape and Lincoln Corsair, into an EV-only factory in under a year. Ford is investing $5 billion across the Louisville site and its BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan, aiming to create 4,000 jobs; it says a three-part assembly process, large castings and private 5G checks could increase production speed by up to 15 per cent.
