SAS: Rogue Heroes, Steven Knight's two-season BBC drama now streaming on Prime Video, is being singled out as the WWII series that finally fills the gap left by Band of Brothers. It dramatises the true story of how the British Special Air Service was formed during the Second World War by David Stirling and Paddy Mayne, a pair of unconventional and often reckless soldiers who assembled a unit of misfits to carry out guerrilla raids behind Axis lines in North Africa. Unlike more reverent WWII dramas such as Masters of the Air or The Liberator, the show mixes chaos, dark humour and stylised violence, bringing the same sensibility Knight used on Peaky Blinders to a war setting.

The series premiered in 2022 and comprises 12 episodes across two seasons, with the second season, released in January 2025, following the SAS into Italy and France as the war nears its end. Connor Swindells plays Stirling and Jack O'Connell plays Mayne, both praised for embracing their characters' flaws rather than softening them for sympathy. Knight has reportedly expressed interest in extending the story beyond the war to cover the SAS's postwar history.
