In a social media post reported by The Guardian, the 34-year CBS News veteran said he and colleagues were forced out in May after refusing to let unverifiable claims or White House talking points into their reporting, or to conduct interviews arranged by the administration. His comments add to mounting scrutiny of the programme's direction as it begins a new season under executive producer Nick Bilton.

Campanile was among several senior figures dismissed in May, alongside former executive editor Tanya Simon and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega; correspondent Scott Pelley, who had clashed with Bilton over the cuts, was later also fired. Campanile argued the shake-up reflects a wider trend of journalism becoming "commoditised" and driven by online trends rather than rigorous scrutiny, and took aim at Weiss and similar figures for lacking traditional reporting backgrounds. He urged remaining staff to "hold the line," quoting Thomas Jefferson on press freedom. CBS News had not responded to The Hollywood Reporter's request for comment at the time of publication.
