Angelynn Mock, 48, a former Fox affiliate news anchor, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in Wichita, Kansas, after fatally stabbing her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers, on Halloween 2025. Avers was found unresponsive in bed wearing only underwear, having suffered multiple stab wounds to her face and torso, with four kitchen knives and a cheese grater left on a pillow beside her. Mock called 911 herself, initially claiming her mother had attacked her first, and the case drew attention given her past television career at Fox 2 in St Louis and Fox 25 in Oklahoma City.

According to Mock's account to police, she had entered her mother's bedroom that day to discuss a prospective job interview with NBC affiliate KSN, only to find her mother sharpening knives and reacting with jealousy and hostility to the news. Her stepfather, Barry Avers, told investigators Mock had a documented history of mental illness, initially diagnosed as bipolar disorder and later revised to schizoaffective disorder, and had experienced "bouts of delusions". He also said she had lost her St Louis anchoring job "after an explosive situation involving alcohol" and had been living with him and his late wife for four to five years before the killing; at the time of her arrest, Mock was working in sales for a data management software firm.

Angelynn Mock is a former television news anchor who worked at Fox affiliate stations in the United States before losing her job in St Louis. She had been living with her stepfather and her mother, Anita Avers, in Wichita, Kansas, having reportedly struggled with mental health issues for several years, including diagnoses of bipolar disorder and later schizoaffective disorder.

The case centres on the death of Avers, aged 80, who was found stabbed at the family home in Wichita. Mock, her daughter, has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder over the killing, and investigators have been piecing together the circumstances of that day, including conflicting accounts of what happened in the moments before the attack.

The story has drawn attention partly because of Mock's past career as a news presenter and partly because of the unusual and disturbing details to emerge from the police investigation, including how the scene was found and the explanations Mock is reported to have given to detectives afterwards.
