Mexican authorities have arrested Ángel Aguirre, the former governor of Guerrero state, over his alleged role in concealing evidence relating to the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College. The case remains a defining symbol of state collusion with cartel violence in Mexico, and Aguirre's arrest is the highest-profile detention since former federal Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam was held on related charges.

Prosecutors allege Aguirre ordered officials to hand over and then destroy security camera footage from the night of the attack, when a cartel in Iguala allegedly attacked the students with the involvement of local, state, federal and military authorities. Attorney General Ernestina Godoy said two witness testimonies gathered this year, though originally collected in 2016, showed the cover-up was "deliberately orchestrated from the highest levels" of Aguirre's administration; he had resigned as governor a month after the students vanished. The victims' families said they had not been notified of the arrest in advance, despite government promises to inform them first of any developments.
