Ho-Yin Mo, a former Chinese-language television journalist and staff member for California Assemblywoman Catherine Stefani, was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Las Vegas airport. The arrest has drawn attention because Stefani has strongly criticised the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies.

The Department of Homeland Security says Mo, a Hong Kong national, entered the United States lawfully in January 2020 but failed to leave by his visa deadline of 15 May that year. He has reportedly been held in Nevada pending removal proceedings; Stefani’s office said legal advice meant he would not comment for now, while DHS maintained that work authorisation or a pending application does not itself provide legal status.
