Rotherham Council has approved plans to convert the vacant Sportsman pub in Swinton into a convenience store, overruling significant local opposition. The pub, on Fitzwilliam Street, has stood empty since it shut during the Covid pandemic in 2020, and the decision matters locally because residents fear the new shop will bring traffic, safety and anti-social behaviour problems to the neighbourhood.

The planning board approved the application on Thursday despite receiving 50 letters of objection and a petition signed by 154 people, with residents citing worries over delivery traffic, limited parking, pedestrian safety at the junction site, littering and crime. Conditions attached to the approval restrict customer opening hours to 07:00-22:00 Monday to Saturday and 07:00-21:00 on Sundays, limit deliveries to set daytime windows, and reserve the site's car park for residential and staff use only. Some residents argued the building should instead be redeveloped into affordable housing.
