Former Rockstar Dev Explains GTA 6’s Console-First Approach

GameSpot · 2 months ago

Former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij has explained why Grand Theft Auto 6 is launching on consoles before PC, describing the approach as consistent with Rockstar’s past release strategy. The decision matters because PC players may face a longer wait for one of the industry’s most anticipated games, while the initial launch will focus on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Vermeij suggested that console development offers a more controlled target, as developers can optimise for a small number of fixed hardware configurations. Rockstar has previously released major Grand Theft Auto titles on consoles first, with PC versions arriving later; GTA 6 is currently scheduled for release on 19 November 2026.

  • Fixed console hardware simplifies optimisation.
