Spencer Korwin, 38, a former Team USA triathlete and father of two, drowned during a morning swim while on holiday with his wife on Shelter Island, New York. His death highlights the dangers of open-water swimming, even in seemingly calm conditions, as strong currents caused by narrow tidal passages can pose a serious risk to even experienced swimmers.

Korwin, a Syracuse University graduate who competed for Team USA at the 2012 Triathlon World Championship in Auckland and was sponsored by Gatorade for five years, entered the water at the Pridwin Hotel's docks around 8am on Wednesday and was later found dead beneath the docks at around 3pm following a search by marine and air units. Police believe the death was an accidental drowning, pending a formal medical examiner's report. He leaves behind his wife and two young daughters, Colette and Sadie, and a GoFundMe for his family has raised over $270,000 of its $300,000 target. He was the second person to drown off Shelter Island this summer, after college student Timothy Magambo died in May.
