Joe Cordina denies two assault charges over Cardiff petrol station fight

Daily Mail ·

Joe Cordina’s trial over two alleged assaults began at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court, where prosecutors said the former world champion boxer acted beyond lawful self-defence during a petrol station altercation. CCTV showed Jamie O’Brien pushing Cordina before Cordina punched him to the ground; the prosecution alleges Cordina later struck again after O’Brien had been restrained.

Cordina, 34, denies two charges of assault by beating and said he felt threatened, with the later punch delivered “out of instinct”, the court heard. O’Brien, 33, pleaded guilty to assaulting Cordina and was ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £26 surcharge. The incident took place at a Texaco garage in Pentwyn, Cardiff, in February, and police began investigating after footage circulated online.

Joe Cordina is a Welsh professional boxer who has held world titles. In England and Wales, self-defence can be a legal defence to an assault charge, but a court must decide whether the force used was lawful in the circumstances.

The case concerns an altercation at a petrol station in Pentwyn, Cardiff. Jamie O’Brien is also charged in connection with the incident, and his guilty plea to assaulting Cordina is a separate part of the proceedings.
