Fortnite is back on Apple’s Australian App Store following court ruling

Engadget ·

Fortnite has returned to Apple’s Australian App Store after a federal court ordered Apple to open iOS to greater competition. The decision matters because it requires changes that could give Australian users and developers more choice over where they get apps and how they pay.

The 1,104-paragraph ruling requires Apple to allow third-party app stores and direct downloads, and lets developers offer alternative payment systems without excessive fees or conditions. Apple must also allow links to external purchases and avoid adding friction to alternative payments or app installations. It has been ordered to pay 85 per cent of Epic’s legal costs and comply by 1 March 2027, but plans to appeal.

In short

  • Fortnite is back on Australia’s App Store.
  • Apple must allow rival app stores and payment options.
  • Apple plans to appeal the ruling.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Opening iOS to rival app stores, direct downloads and alternative payments could give users more choice and let developers reach customers without relying on Apple’s terms and fees. Supporters may see the ruling as a proportionate way to curb the power of a dominant platform and encourage competition, while Apple’s appeal preserves the chance for further review.

The case against

Apple can argue that controlling app distribution and payments helps it maintain security, privacy and a consistent user experience across iOS. It may also contend that mandated alternatives constrain its ability to manage the platform and fund its services, and that the ruling’s requirements should be reconsidered on appeal before they take effect.
