Fortnite’s Ultra-Rare Pirate Shop Token Hunt Sparks Wave of Profiteering and eBay Listings
Fortnite’s One Piece crossover has sent players searching for a rare Pirate Shop Token, which grants free access to most items in the shop for two weeks. The hunt has prompted some players to sell automated farming tools and paid help, while others have listed accounts with access for thousands of dollars, despite Epic’s rules against account trading and exploiting.
There is no official drop rate, but players estimate the token appears in about one in every 700,000 chests. Methods to speed up the search include destroying chests in locked vaults with grenades or cannonballs; two eBay listings asking $9,000 and $10,000 had no bids and have since been removed. Epic says buying accounts or using fake tools is a scam, and warns that rule-breaking can lead to account bans; the season ends on 4 December.
In short
- A rare Fortnite token is estimated to drop in one in 700,000 chests.
- Players tried selling farming tools, help and accounts with shop access.
- Epic says account sales and exploits risk bans.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The token is an unusually valuable in-game reward, and players may see selling genuine access or offering search assistance as a way to monetise time, skill or a scarce opportunity. Some may also argue that, where the token is obtained within the game, adults should be free to trade what they own, provided buyers understand the risks.
The case against
Account sales and automated farming can undermine fair play, expose buyers to scams and conflict with the rules players accepted to use the game. Epic can reasonably restrict these activities to protect the game’s economy and other players’ experience, while the token’s extreme rarity and short availability make the market especially vulnerable to misleading offers.
Explained simply
Fortnite is an online game in which players explore, compete and collect items. Its One Piece crossover brings characters and themed goods from the Japanese manga and anime series into the game. The Pirate Shop Token is a rare in-game item that gives a player access to most shop items for two weeks.
Players usually find items by opening chests around the game world, though some try to speed up the search by targeting chests in locked areas. Epic Games, which makes Fortnite, sets rules for how accounts and the game may be used. Account trading and tools that exploit the game can break those rules, and may put players’ accounts at risk.
