Fujifilm has unveiled the Instax Pal 2, a follow-up to its tiny, quirky Pal camera from three years ago. Unlike the original, which had no screen or viewfinder, the new model adopts a design resembling a miniaturised analogue film camera and joins a trend of pocket-sized cameras such as the Kodak Charmera, though Fujifilm's version boasts specifications that suggest it could take noticeably better photos.

The Instax Pal 2 will go on sale in the US later this month priced at $169.95, featuring a 1/3.06-inch sensor and an f/2.2 28mm lens capable of shooting images up to 10 megapixels, a marked improvement on the Kodak Charmera's 1.6-megapixel sensor. It offers an optical viewfinder alongside a 1.3-inch LCD screen, autofocus with optional face detection, and adjustable ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation, plus a shutter button, joystick and film-advance-style lever. Photos can be sent wirelessly via Bluetooth or through a slide-out USB-C port to a phone or instant printer, and the camera also includes a flash, tripod mount, self-timer and a rechargeable battery said to last up to three hours.
