Fund to help businesses switch to green vehicles

BBC Science ·

Bradford Council has launched a £2m grant scheme to help small businesses and other organisations switch to cleaner vehicles. The programme aims to support fleet upgrades and help businesses manage rising fuel costs, while contributing to cleaner air.

Applicants can seek up to £16,000 for heavy-duty vehicles or £4,500 for light-duty vehicles. The fund is part of the council’s Clean Air programme and is funded by the Labour government. Council leader Stephen Place has also said Reform UK plans to scrap Clean Air Zone charges while keeping the zone; a local business representative welcomed the grants, saying fleet decarbonisation is on many firms’ agenda.

In short

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The grants could help small businesses afford cleaner vehicles that might otherwise be beyond their budgets, while reducing exhaust pollution and supporting cleaner air. By easing the upfront cost of fleet upgrades, the scheme may also help firms manage fuel costs and make progress towards decarbonisation.

The case against

Public money for vehicle upgrades may not be the best use of limited funds, particularly if grants go to businesses that would have replaced their vehicles anyway. Firms could also argue that the scheme does not address the wider costs of switching, and that keeping Clean Air Zone charges while subsidising upgrades may leave businesses facing both expenses.
