PC Tom Clough, 38, will be laid to rest today in Redcar with full police honours, a day after his colleague PC Matthew Blades was buried in Hartlepool. Both officers died last month when their armed response vehicle was hit head-on on the A66 near Middlesbrough by a Volkswagen Passat carrying youths fleeing police, a crash that triggered widespread disorder in the north-east.

Clough had served with Cleveland Police, the Civil Nuclear Police and British Transport Police, and previously saw active duty with the British Army in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of an explosive ordnance disposal and search regiment. Colleagues and family described him as a devoted, humorous and popular officer who "gave everything to everybody," with Cleveland Police Federation chair Lauren Somerville praising the overwhelming public support shown to his family, while his former commanding officer at Sellafield paid tribute to his professionalism and character.
