Viral recording alleging Talarico’s Ohio treatment was misleadingly edited

Daily Mail ·

A viral recording released by pro-Trump influencer Nick Sortor appeared to show Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico being discharged from a mental health facility in Ohio, garnering over six million views. The audio clip, made by pro-Trump activist Rhein Amacher, seemed to contradict Talarico's claim that he had been recovering from flu during a nearly two-week absence from campaigning. However, the Lindner Center of Hope in Ohio issued a statement directly denying Talarico had ever received treatment there, undermining the recording's credibility.

An investigation revealed the 47-second excerpt publicised online came from a roughly six-minute conversation in which the receptionist repeatedly stated there was no one named James Talarico at the facility. The only portion circulated showed the receptionist saying "looks like he was just discharged this evening" – without the context of repeated denials that preceded it. Talarico reappeared at public events including Austin City Limits Music Festival and stated he had recovered at home in Austin after visiting his physician, whilst his Republican opponent Ken Paxton's campaign remained silent on the allegation.

The recording came from pro-Trump sources and garnered six million views. The Lindner Center of Hope in Ohio subsequently issued a statement denying that Talarico had ever received treatment there.

Investigation revealed the 47-second clip shown widely online was taken from a longer conversation where the receptionist repeatedly said there was no one named Talarico at the facility.
