Graves Gallery in Sheffield will close at the end of October ahead of a major refurbishment of the Grade II* listed building housing it, the central library and city archives. The closure is intended to help accelerate redevelopment and protect the collection, following problems with the building’s heating system that recently put artworks at risk.

The gallery has been part of Sheffield’s cultural life since 1934 and has displayed works by artists including Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. Its collection will be stored temporarily before moving to a street-level venue in the Heart of the City next year; the temporary base has not yet been confirmed, while an 18-month feasibility study is being considered by the council.
