Game of Thrones Author George R.R. Martin Shares Personal Update, Discusses Health and ‘Falling Further and Further Behind’

IGN · 3 hours ago

Author George R.R. Martin has broken a six-month silence on his personal blog with a candid update on his health and struggles, admitting he is "falling further and further behind." The 77-year-old described 2026 as "stressful" and overwhelming, referencing lost friends, depression and worries about "the worst" still to come, offering fans a rare, personal glimpse into his current state amid ongoing frustration over the delayed Winds of Winter novel.

In the post, titled "Better Late Than Never," Martin acknowledged getting older is "no fun" but pointed to positives too, including nine Emmy nominations for Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He gave no update on his writing progress and made no mention of House of the Dragon, having previously called his relationship with its showrunner "abysmal." Martin has previously said Winds of Winter may never be finished and that no one else would take over the series if he doesn't complete it, even as the wider Game of Thrones franchise continues to expand with a new UK stage play and early plans for an HBO sequel series centred on Arya Stark.
