George R.R. Martin is reportedly writing a fourth Dunk and Egg novella, providing new source material for HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms while The Winds of Winter remains unfinished. The development matters because the series’ future may depend on fresh canonical stories as its young actor playing Egg ages and the show moves beyond the existing novellas.

Showrunner Ira Parker told The Hollywood Reporter that the fourth story is set in a “very cool location”, while a fifth would conclude Egg’s childhood before later tales could depict him as a prince. Parker also said Martin had shared unpublished prose that the production used as canon, supplementing earlier outlines for more than a dozen Dunk and Egg stories; season two is nearly finished filming.
