Silent Hill and Resident Evil, once regarded as declining horror franchises, are experiencing a major revival. Their recent success across games and film suggests that both series remain creatively important, while their developers are finding new ways to balance familiarity with experimentation.

Resident Evil’s resurgence began with Resident Evil 7 and continued through remakes, new entries such as Village and Requiem, and a successful film reboot that achieved the franchise’s strongest opening. Silent Hill returned after the cancellation of Silent Hills, with the Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill F and now Silent Hill: Townfall. Released for PS5 and PC, Townfall places players in a deserted Scottish town and uses exploration, environmental storytelling and psychological horror rather than relying primarily on combat.
