Gaza records more birth defects in nine months than in all of 2022, Wafa reports
A medical source in Gaza told Wafa that 260 birth defects were recorded among newborns from January to September 2026, more than the 184 reported in all of 2022, before Israel’s war began. The figures raise concern about the health conditions facing pregnant women and newborns, but do not by themselves establish how common congenital anomalies are or what caused them.
The source also reported 322 cases in 2025, 75 per cent above the 2022 total, and called for an independent international scientific investigation. Possible contributing factors include maternal malnutrition, environmental pollutants and disrupted prenatal care during the war. A January 2025 Human Rights Watch report described serious risks to pregnant women amid the war, blockade, damage to health facilities and shortages of food, water and medicine.
In short
- Gaza recorded 260 birth defect cases in the first nine months of 2026.
- The figure exceeds the 184 cases reported for all of 2022.
- The data do not establish causes or the rate among newborns.
