Geese respond to ‘psyop’ allegations: “Just come to the show, and fucking tell me how many bots you see”

NME · 1 hour ago

Brooklyn rock band Geese have pushed back against persistent online claims that their rapid rise to fame is an "industry plant" or "psyop" orchestrated through covert marketing rather than genuine fan enthusiasm. The speculation grew after Wired published a piece suggesting the band's viral breakthrough may have been engineered, prompting the group to publicly defend the authenticity of their fanbase and challenge sceptics to attend their live shows and judge for themselves.

The rumours date back over a year, fuelled by social media users on TikTok and X who attributed Geese's sudden popularity to digital marketing strategies. Wired's report cited Chaotic Good Projects, a marketing firm that confirmed running campaigns for Geese and frontman Cameron Winter, though its cofounder denied using fake accounts or bots. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Winter admitted the allegations briefly rattled the band, who confronted their label, but said he was reassured after seeing the "low-effort" TikTok content used to boost algorithmic reach. Bassist Dominic DiGesu and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard also dismissed the psyop theory, with Gibbard calling it "fucking ridiculous."
