Gemma Chan Shares Update On Anna May Wong Biopic: “It’s A Really Resonant Story”

Actress Gemma Chan has provided a progress update on her Anna May Wong biopic, revealing that screenwriter David Henry Hwang has completed the script adaptation of a 2012 biography. The project, announced in 2022 and produced by Nina Yang Bongiovi and Working Title Films, remains in development with Wong's niece attached as a consultant. Chan emphasised the contemporary significance of Wong's experiences, noting that her lifelong questions about identity and belonging in American society remain relevant to audiences today.

Wong, born in 1905, became Hollywood's first Chinese-American leading lady, building a career across silent and sound films on both sides of the Atlantic before her death in 1961. The announcement comes as a separate production, Sunset Boulevard – The Anna May Wong Story featuring Xin Zhilei, also moves forward under Fundamental Films. Both projects aim to elevate Wong's historical legacy and her groundbreaking role in reshaping Asian-American representation on screen.
