Gene Hoglan said the most demanding drumming of his career was on MECHANISM’s album “Inspired Horrific”, describing it as a major technical challenge comparable to DEATH’s “Human”. He said his work across bands including OPETH, FORBIDDEN, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and TESTAMENT has taught him to embrace different challenges while adapting his playing to each song’s needs.

Hoglan argued that drumming should serve the music rather than constantly display technical ability, citing the contrasting approaches on STRAPPING YOUNG LAD’s “City” and TESTAMENT’s “Demonic”. He said he would rather be regarded as a versatile, well-rounded drummer than simply a fast one, and explained that he has long tried to introduce unfamiliar beats and concepts, while drawing inspiration from others and adding his own ideas.
