General Staff: Russia has lost 1,597,010 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022
Ukraine’s General Staff says Russia has suffered 1,597,010 troop casualties since its full-scale invasion began in February 2022, including 2,180 in the past day. The figure underscores the scale of losses in the war, though Ukraine does not publish its own overall military casualty figures.
The Ukrainian report also lists Russian equipment losses, including 12,453 tanks, 51,879 artillery systems, 452 aircraft and 35 ships and boats. A January 2026 CSIS estimate put Russian casualties at roughly two to two-and-a-half times Ukraine’s, whose losses it estimated at 500,000 to 600,000 by December 2025; President Volodymyr Zelensky has said at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in action.
In short
- Ukraine reports 1,597,010 Russian troop casualties since the invasion began.
- The latest daily figure is 2,180.
- CSIS estimates Russian casualties substantially exceed Ukraine’s.
Explained simply
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, expanding a conflict that had been under way since 2014. Ukraine’s General Staff is part of the country’s armed forces and regularly publishes estimates of Russian personnel and equipment losses.
In military reporting, “casualties” can include soldiers killed, wounded, captured or missing, so it does not mean deaths alone. Both sides’ losses are difficult to verify independently, and Ukraine has not published a comparable overall figure for its own military casualties.
The scale of losses matters because it helps show the human and material cost of a war that continues to shape security in Europe. Estimates differ, and figures from the two sides and outside researchers use different methods and time periods.
