George Lucas has revealed he had planned to direct three additional Star Wars films but chose to retire from directing instead to focus on creating the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. At 82 years old, Lucas explained he felt pressed for time and prioritised bringing his museum vision to life over continuing his filmmaking career.

Lucas directed four Star Wars films during his career, starting with the original 1977 film and later helming the three-part prequel trilogy. He sold Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise to Disney in 2012 for $4 billion, after which the company continued expanding the universe through sequels, television series and upcoming films like Star Wars: Starfighter. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which opened to the public on Tuesday, was created to showcase illustrators and narrative artists whom Lucas believed were overlooked.
