George R.R. Martin has confirmed that Daemon Targaryen is his favourite character among the Targaryen dynasty, explaining in a recent interview what makes the "Rogue Prince" stand out. The revelation adds context to the character's popularity following Matt Smith's portrayal in House of the Dragon, HBO's prequel series based on Martin's book Fire & Blood, which reignited interest in the world of Westeros after Game of Thrones' divisive final season.

Martin, who describes himself as "notorious" for favouring morally grey characters, said Daemon appeals to him precisely because he is one of the greyest figures in his saga, citing his complex relationship with niece-turned-wife Rhaenyra, his repeated switching of allegiances, and his unpredictable, colourful nature. Daemon, brother of King Viserys I, was a celebrated warrior and dragon rider knighted at 16, wielded the Valyrian blade Dark Sister, was informally titled King of the Narrow Sea during the Stepstones war, and later served as one of Rhaenyra's key generals during the Dance of the Dragons succession war.
