Actor and filmmaker Georgina Lightning has died at the age of 63 following an accident at a rodeo event on the Enoch Cree Nation reserve in Alberta, Canada. She was reportedly struck by a horse while filming a documentary about the Indian Relay event, and paramedics were unable to save her, pronouncing her dead at the scene. Her death has prompted tributes from former colleagues and highlights her significant legacy as a pioneering Indigenous filmmaker and actor.

Lightning, a Canadian-born member of a First Nation community, appeared in television shows including Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and, most recently, the 2025 film Die, My Love alongside Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence. She made history in 2008 as the first North American Indigenous woman to direct a major film with the supernatural thriller Older Than America, and went on to found organisations such as Tribal Alliance Productions and the Native Media Network to support Indigenous people in the industry. The Enoch Cree Nation confirmed the incident in a statement on 5 September, while her daughter Crystle and former co-star Tim Healy were among those paying tribute.
