A Munich regional court has ruled that AI music company Suno infringed copyrights by using works represented by German licensing body GEMA. The decision strengthens the position of music creators and licensing agencies seeking payment or permission when copyrighted material is used to develop generative AI systems.

Suno said it disagreed with the ruling, arguing that its models create new songs rather than reproduce existing ones, and is considering an appeal. Details of the judgment were not disclosed, but GEMA said the court confirmed it could pursue a case in Germany regardless of where training occurred; Suno does not expect the ruling to affect US litigation.
