September brings crowded smartphone launch schedule

The Verge ·

September is shaping up to be an unusually intense month for smartphone launches, with dozens of new devices expected from major manufacturers within weeks of each other. The rush, dubbed "Techtember" by tech journalists, has returned in force after a few quieter years, driven partly by Qualcomm shifting its flagship chip announcements earlier to give phone makers time to launch before the holiday shopping season.

The month kicked off with Poco's F9 Pro and F9 Ultra, and continues with Berlin's IFA trade show, where Xiaomi, Tecno and TCL are expected to unveil new devices, including a possible Xiaomi 18 Fold. Apple holds its own event on 9 September, likely revealing new iPhones and possibly its first foldable model, while Huawei, Vivo, Honor, Oppo and OnePlus are all tipped to launch flagships later in the month. Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit, running from 22 to 24 September, is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip, triggering a further wave of Android launches; analysts at Android Headlines estimate at least 20 phones will debut this month, though many are expected to be modest updates rather than major redesigns.

Smartphone makers usually announce their most expensive models in the second half of the year, ahead of the holiday shopping season. Several companies are involved, including Apple, which makes iPhones, and Android phone makers such as Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei and Oppo.

Qualcomm supplies chips used in many Android phones. Its annual Snapdragon announcements can influence when manufacturers launch new devices, as they need time to build phones around the latest chips. Berlin’s IFA trade show is another regular setting for electronics announcements.

A crowded launch calendar gives shoppers more new models to compare, but a new phone does not always mean a major change: some releases update the chip or other components while keeping much of the design. Foldable phones, which open out to provide a larger screen, are one area where manufacturers have been exploring different designs.
