“Getting sidetracked doesn’t feel too unnatural”: Baldur’s Gate 3 Act Two Expansion modder on how they seamlessly fit a “detour” to fight an army into the RPG’s plot

Modder SquallyDaBeanz has released a beta custom campaign expansion for Baldur's Gate 3 that inserts an entirely new chapter between the RPG's second and third acts. The expansion, called Act Two Expansion, features exploration of The Chionthar Wilds whilst the Absolute's Army marches towards the city, providing a breathing space between Act 2's narrative climax and Act 3's final confrontation.

The mod aims to replicate Act 1's exploratory feel, allowing players to wander through a large area where side activities tie into the main narrative without being essential, creating the sense that "getting sidetracked doesn't feel too unnatural." SquallyDaBeanz, who previously worked on the Skyrim-to-Morrowind remake Skywind, had to learn new modding skills including scripting, enemy behaviours, and cutscene creation, navigating toolkit bugs and limited documentation to complete the project; the mod is available on Nexus Mods in both full-playthrough and quickstart versions, with patches already in development based on community feedback.

  • Solo modder adds new chapter between BG3's Act 2 and 3
  • Expansion provides natural exploration space before the final act
  • Modder learned new skills developing the comprehensive custom campaign
