GhostBSD 26.2 adds encryption and a simpler installer for FreeBSD desktops
GhostBSD 26.2 aims to make FreeBSD easier for desktop users to try, adding a simpler installer and full-disk encryption. The update matters to Linux users curious about FreeBSD, whose standard text-based setup usually requires extra work to install and configure a graphical desktop.
Version 26.2-R15.1p6 is based on FreeBSD 15.1 and has a smaller installation image, alongside fixes for Wi-Fi, network names and USB devices. It offers MATE 1.28 as standard or community-supported Xfce 4.20; the previously available Gershwin desktop is absent while its packaging remains difficult. GhostBSD uses the XLibre X11 server, and a new desktop called Mocka is still in early development.
In short
- GhostBSD 26.2 adds full-disk encryption and a simpler installer.
- The release is based on FreeBSD 15.1.
- MATE and Xfce remain available, while Gershwin is absent.
