Glen Powell will star as New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig in an untitled biopic directed by Richard Linklater, reuniting the pair after 2016's college baseball comedy Everybody Wants Some!!. The project brings together Powell, Linklater and Saturday Night Live's Lorne Michaels, a lifelong Yankees fan who will produce alongside Powell, marking a notable convergence of Hollywood and sports storytelling talent around one of baseball's most revered figures.

Simon Rich, another SNL veteran, is writing the screenplay, while Linklater is currently in talks to produce as well as direct. Deadline reports that Gehrig's teammate Babe Dahlgren, who succeeded him at first base, will feature prominently in the film. No production start date has been confirmed, though Powell is expected to take a break after a busy year that included The Running Man, How to Make a Killing, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Chad Powers. Gehrig, nicknamed "the Iron Horse" for his then-record 2,130 consecutive games, was a two-time MVP, seven-time All-Star and six-time World Series champion before his career was ended by ALS in 1939; he died in 1941 aged 37. His life was previously depicted in the 1942 film The Pride of the Yankees.
