GM is centring future electric vehicles on computing and AI

TechCrunch ·

General Motors is reshaping its next generation of electric vehicles around computing power, software and artificial intelligence, aiming to compete with Chinese automakers and newer rivals. The strategy reflects how vehicle software is increasingly seen as a way to distinguish cars, alongside traditional factors such as ride and handling.

The new platform will bring together vehicle systems in a central computing unit that GM says is 40 times more powerful than its current systems. The technology is due to debut in the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028, alongside a planned highway driving feature that would let drivers take their hands and eyes off the road without being ready to take over. GM reported $866 million in capitalised software amortisation expense in 2025, reflecting its substantial software investment.
