God of War Laufey delayed further into 2027 for ‘finishing touches’
God of War: Laufey has been delayed from 16 February to 20 May 2027. Sony Santa Monica says the extra time will allow the team to add finishing touches and push the game towards its full potential.
The spinoff centres on Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, and was announced at June’s State of Play after leaks had pointed to a new God of War game. Its story involves the “afterlife of the gods”, and Kratos is confirmed to appear; the studio thanked fans for their patience and said it would share more updates soon.
In short
- God of War: Laufey moves to 20 May 2027.
- The studio says it needs more time for polish.
- The game follows Faye and includes Kratos.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The delay gives the developers more time to polish the game and bring it closer to the quality they are aiming for, which may make the eventual experience more satisfying for players. A short wait can be worthwhile if it helps the team deliver the story and gameplay as fully as intended.
The case against
Moving the release back may disappoint players who have been anticipating the game and planned around its announced date. It also leaves fans waiting longer for details about a spinoff whose story and place in the series are still largely unclear.
Explained simply
God of War is a video game series centred on Kratos, a warrior whose stories draw on myths about the gods. In its more recent games, his family life has become central: his wife Faye has died before the events of the main story, while their son Atreus travels with him.
Laufey is a spin-off focused on Faye, whose name is also used for the game’s title character. It is set around the afterlife of the gods, with Kratos also appearing, and expands the series’ story beyond his usual point of view.
The game was announced by Sony Santa Monica, the studio behind the series. It matters to fans because it offers more of the characters and mythology they know, while putting Faye at the centre of a new story.
