God of War Laufey has officially been delayed
Sony Santa Monica has delayed God of War Laufey by three months, moving its release from 16 February to 20 May 2027. The studio says it needs more time to finish the game and fulfil its ambition, making the change notable for players awaiting the first mainline God of War led by someone other than Kratos.
The game stars Faye, Kratos’s Norse wife and Atreus’s mother, and follows her journey after her funeral. Its story sees her awaken in a strange land called the Everywhen, where she must confront mythological gods and dangerous magic to protect her family.
In short
- God of War Laufey now launches on 20 May 2027.
- The release has shifted three months from its original date.
- Faye is the first non-Kratos lead in a mainline God of War.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A delay can give the studio time to improve the game and better realise its ambitions, which may make the finished experience more satisfying for players. With a new lead character and an unusual story setting, extra development time could also help establish Faye’s journey with the care it deserves.
The case against
Moving the release by three months may disappoint players who have been planning around the February date, especially those eager to see the series move beyond Kratos. A delay can also weaken confidence in the announced schedule, and the studio’s aim to fulfil its ambition may not reassure players unless the extra time leads to a noticeably stronger game.
Explained simply
God of War is a long-running action game series about gods, monsters and family. Its best-known main character is Kratos, a warrior who has appeared in most of the main games.
Laufey, also known as Faye, is Kratos’s wife and the mother of Atreus. The game follows her after her funeral, as she wakes in a strange place called the Everywhen and faces gods and magic while trying to protect her family.
The story shifts the series’ focus to a character who has mostly been part of Kratos and Atreus’s story so far. That makes the game a new entry point for Faye’s perspective on the family and its mythological world.
