Prime Video's God of War adaptation has recast its lead actor after Ryan Hurst, who played Kratos, suffered an on-set bicep injury. Rather than wait for Hurst to recover, which would have delayed filming into 2027, producers chose to replace him entirely, a decision Collider argues is more damaging to the show's prospects than any delay would have been, given how central Kratos is to the story and how well-suited Hurst reportedly was to the role.

The series, developed for Prime Video by Battlestar Galactica and Outlander writer Ronald D. Moore, adapts the acclaimed 2018 God of War reboot and its sequel Ragnarök, following the exiled god Kratos and his son Atreus. Four episodes had already been filmed with Hurst, who had undergone a significant physical transformation for the part, meaning those episodes will likely need reshooting, with knock-on pressure for Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus. It remains unclear who will replace Hurst or how long recasting and any renewed physical preparation might take.
