Godzilla Director Reveals the Secret MonsterVerse Easter Egg In His New Action Thriller

Filmmaker Adam Wingard, best known for directing the two most recent Godzilla movies alongside indie horror hits such as You're Next and The Guest, has released a new sci-fi horror thriller called Onslaught. The $25 million A24 production follows a single mother, played by Adria Arjona, who must defend herself and her trailer park from a trio of zombified super-soldiers unleashed by a Nazi scientist, and draws heavily on 1970s grindhouse cinema for its tone and style. In an interview with Polygon, Wingard explained how the film blends gritty B-movie sensibilities with a polished modern finish, and discussed the varied influences he brought to the project.

Wingard cited Quentin Tarantino, particularly Pulp Fiction and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as a major inspiration, both for the film's vivid Kill Bill-style blood effects and its distinctive needle-drop soundtrack approach. A standout musical choice sees the film's Nazi scientist character, played by Dan Stevens, listen to German-language covers of popular songs, a touch Wingard believes is unique to Onslaught this year. The score itself, composed by longtime collaborator Matthew Pusti of the band Makeup and Vanity, fuses John Carpenter-inspired melodies with techno and guitar elements; Pusti had previously worked with Wingard on Death Note and on unused previsualisation music for Godzilla vs. Kong.
