Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki, whose 2023 hit Godzilla Minus One won an Academy Award for visual effects, is set to direct an original science-fiction film titled Nue for 20th Century Studios in partnership with Ridley Scott's Scott Free banner. The project marks another step in Yamazaki's move into Hollywood and is described as a long-held passion project, an original concept he has been developing for years, with plot details kept under wraps beyond a hint that the story is "buried deep in the ocean".
Godzilla Minus One, set in post-war Japan and following a disgraced kamikaze pilot, was made for just $10 million and earned $116 million globally. Yamazaki has already shot a sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, which relocates the monster to New York and will be released theatrically by GKIDS on 6 November, and he has the Sony/Bad Robot feature Grandgear dated for 2028. Nue continues 20th Century's long relationship with Scott, who directed Alien for the studio in 1979; Scott will produce alongside Michael Pruss, with additional producers including Keiichiro Moriya, Go Abe, Georgina Pope and Amie Horiuchi.
