The Tokyo International Film Festival has unveiled the centrepiece and bookend selections for its 39th edition, headlined by Yamazaki Takashi's "Godzilla Minus Zero" as centrepiece, Zeze Takahisa's music drama "Sukiyaki" as opener, and Yeon Sang-ho's zombie thriller "Colony" as closer. The line-up highlights the festival's blend of major domestic blockbusters and international genre cinema, with the Godzilla sequel building on the Oscar-winning success of its predecessor and the Korean closing film arriving fresh from acclaim at Cannes.

"Godzilla Minus Zero", written and effects-supervised by Yamazaki, follows "Godzilla Minus One" (which won the Academy Award for best visual effects) and is billed as the story's conclusion; it stars Kamiki Ryunosuke and Hamabe Minami and is the first Japanese feature shot for Imax, opening in Japan on 3 November via Toho. "Sukiyaki" dramatises the making of the 1963 chart-topping song of the same name through the lives of composer Nakamura Hachidai, lyricist Ei Rokusuke and singer Sakamoto Kyu, and releases in Japan on 25 December. "Colony", from "Train to Busan" director Yeon Sang-ho, follows a bioterror outbreak in a Seoul skyscraper, premiered at Cannes, and topped Asian box offices before its planned 2027 Japanese release via Gaga Corporation. The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival runs from 26 October to 4 November, overlapping with the TIFFCOM industry market from 28 to 30 October.
